The 100 biggest charities in the UK

July 7th, 2008

I recently got thinking about the big charities in the UK and got curious about which charities in the UK are the biggest. I could not find any good list on the Internet so I thought I’d make one!

I started by looking at the charity commision which has a brake down of each charity which includes the last few years income and expenditure. I then wrote a little (a rather bodgy) PHP script to take the money figures and create a MySQL table of figures. It frustrates me that with all the information being put in accessible feeds and APIs by the government, information on charities (as far as I can see) is not. In fact it’s in very badly written HTML (could this be a way of stopping people ripping the data?).

Anyway here are the top 100 charities in the UK based on income in the 2006-2007 period:

Obviously there are a couple of flaws which could have effected this list, namely:

  • Many charities are slit into several different charity numbers (for example by region or cause), which would give them a distinct disadvantage.
  • Some charities give money to other charities, so we’re counting the same money twice!
  • Some charities accounts aren’t up to date on the site.
  • The script is very bodgey, so some data might simply be missed.

Holy Trinity Church

June 4th, 2008

I’ve recently been doing a site for a very old church in York called Holy Trinity which is no longer used as a church but is conserved by The Churches Conversation Trust where it gets around 50,000 visitors a year. They were keen to develop a site to give more information and pictures than what was currently available on the trust’s website. The new site is a at www.yorkholytrinity.org.uk. All the photography on the site was done with my new camera, the Canon Eos350. Below are some of the pictures:

Toy Town University

May 15th, 2008

I recently came across this effect whist stumbling. It’s very simple to set up and I love the results. It uses the lens blur filter found with Photoshop CS. Here’s how it’s done:

  • Press Q to go into quick mask mode
  • Select gradient with a ‘reflected gradient’ style and draw a vertical line from the center of the photo.
  • Press Q again to return to the normal mode.
  • go to filters > blur > lens blur.
  • Play about to get the perfect picture and enjoy!
  • You can also adjust the saturation to make it a bit more colourful.

So here is The University Of York - toy town style:
